There has been a reasonable amount of publicity recently in the UK railway
press about the move to re-open the Alnwick to Alnmouth branch in northern
England.
However, can anyone give me any information on the history of the line from
Alnwick to Coldstream, via Wooler?
As far as I know it closed to passengers relatively early - in the 1930s -
but not to freight until 1965.
Much of the route (and most of the station buildings) seems to be still
intact.
Considering the surprising lack of traffic on the parallel A697 road, even
in the summer tourist season, I assume no case could ever be made for
reopening?!
I would like to find out a lot more about this route, so would be pleased to
hear about eny information mailbase subscribers could offer.
