The current list interchange on MMR is very interesting - but I'd like to restate my original question.
Say Tony Blair, feeling tired and a little snitty following a long day saving Africa, said:
"Look Sainsbury, don't you spend a lot of Gordon's money on all sorts of public understanding of science organisations? I'd like you to drop by tomorrow and tell me what these organisations have done to help calm down the whole MMR hoohah."
Would Lord Sainsbury end up replying?
1. They've done x, y, z - and things would have been much worse without them. You know, I think we should increase their funding so they can do even more good work.
2. They were a bit slow off the mark, but they're starting to do x, y and z - and we think this is beginning to have an impact.
3. They're not really there to respond to short-term crises like MMR - but to work on deeper and more long-term issues.
4. They haven't done anything - and I'm actually jolly embarrassed about it. Yes, you may have my resignation Prime Minister.
5. Something else.
