Here is a little evidence of public dialogue (Monday's FT article):
www.changingclimate.org
My colleagues and I at the University of Oxford's Environmental Change
Institute have recently launched a new environment and society forum that is
designed for public dialogue about science and risk. changingclimate.org's
is explicit about issues of trust, encouraging dialogue and debate for sense
making, and is structured around stages of real-world learning. Scientists,
researchers and other participants use their own voices, and the underlying
philosophy is public participation in building and steering the site's
content.
In particular, I draw your attention to Alex Kirby's contribution (BBC
environment correspondent), 'Climate change, what a great story it was.'
The article is a transcript of Alex's contribution to Communicating Climate
Change, our recent forum of climate scientists and policymakers,
sociologists, journalists, and science communicators.
I hope that you visit the site, and I would be very pleased to receive your
critical comments of our concept (on list or off). Even more so, I should be
delighted if you would like to contribute an article on communicating
climate change and/or science communication.
Climate change is the theme of our pilot project because it is the science
and environment issue that our market research respondents most wanted a web
site about (less than 40% wanted genetic modification). We want to grow the
site concept to include other issues of science and society. Are there any
funders on this list who are interested in supporting our innovative online
action about science and society?
