JOB DESCRIPTION -YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROGRAMME OFFICER (AWARDS)
The Young People's Programme Officer (Awards) is part of the team delivering
and developing the young people's programme of the BA, currently in the
context of Science Year. Current activities in the young people's programme
are award schemes (First and Young Investigators, CREST and Science
Communicators), and events and activities (Visions, other activities for 14
- 19 year olds and the BA CREST/Science Fair. The officer will be involved
with developing the award schemes. The officer reports to the CREST Manager
and liaises closely with the young people's team. The salary offered is
from £18ooo pa.
Responsibilities will include:
* delivering the logistical requirements of the awards programmes,
primarily CREST, including database management, the production of
statistics, answering queries and close liaison with the CREST regional
managers, schools and sponsors
*
* promoting the BA award schemes
*
* developing and building links between these activities and further
project ideas, some in liaison with the BA's partners, to form a seamless
and coherent programme
*
* providing central coordination to CREST regional events and liaising
with staff delivering the CREST/BA Science Fair
*
* contributing to the development of a unique programme appropriate
for the BA's role as a major partner in the DfES Science Year initiative
*
* liaising with relevant external bodies as appropriate
* assisting in the planning and delivering of the marketing of all
events
* contributing ideas on sharing best practice between activities and
between those taking part in them and acting on those ideas
* assisting with producing estimates and costings in consultation with
others
* playing a full part in the wider team in the division and across
other divisions
* other tasks as required by the CREST Manager
The position is offered on a full-time, three-year contract.
From time to time the job entails working extended hours and occasional
weekends. The post is based at the BA headquarters currently in Savile Row,
London. The BA headquarters will be relocating to South Kensington in 2003.
PERSON SPECIFICATION - YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROGRAMME OFFICER (AWARDS)
The successful candidate will
* have excellent interpersonal skills
*
* have an understanding of the current science education community and
the BA's role within it.
*
* have experience in running young people's activities including
logistics and delivery
*
* have experience of working on numerous tasks in parallel and
juggling conflicting priorities
*
* have successful experience of liaising closely with stakeholders in
running events
*
* be able to communicate clearly verbally and in writing with a wide
range of people including young people, their teachers and their parents or
carers
*
* have experience of marketing to the educational community
*
* be able to keep calm and level-headed under pressure
*
* be comfortable dealing with people at all levels within the BA and
externally, including young people
*
* be a self starter with a 'can do' attitude, able to work
independently and as part of a team
*
* be computer literate with knowledge of Access database software
* be available to start work as soon as possible
