Have you thought of getting stuff out to ABSW-L?
Mark is a member of the ABSW. Not sure if he has joined ABSW-L.
I will also be in touch about the ABSW newsletter when I know what the
plan is for the next issue, whether we will do one more old style flimsy
or will move into a fatter, more substantial production.

Subject: Science Media Centre
Hello
Just to let you know that the Science Media Centre is now open for
business.
A (very!) brief description of what we plan to do is:
'The Science Media Centre is an independent venture working to promote
the
voices, stories and views of the scientific community to the news media
when
science is in the headlines. The overall goal of the Centre is to help
renew public trust in science by promoting a more balanced, accurate and
rational coverage of the controversial science stories that now
regularly
hit the headlines. The Centre will operate like a newsroom, reacting to
the
news agenda while pro-actively promoting a spectrum of scientific
opinion.
It will aim to gain a reputation with the media for a fast, accurate and
media friendly response. It will focus primarily on non-specialist
correspondents and newsrooms that do not have access to their own
science
correspondents.'
More information can be found at www.ScienceMediaCentre.org, including a
copy of the report of our consultation (which took place over a period
of
three months to establish the focus of the Centre.)
Also, in addition to the service described above, the Science Media
Centre
has a beautiful venue in central London (Albemarle street, W1) which you
are
welcome to use. It has ISDN facilities, power-point and internet access
(five terminals), a board table (seats about 8). So it could be used
for
anything from a press conference to a place for a small meeting or
interview. Based outside London and need a place to meet a journalist
for
coffee? Doing a joint press briefing with three differnt institutions
and
arguing about who should host it? Managed to get your scientist onto
BBC
Radio Manchester but she/he refuses to go to White City to do it and
need a
central London ISDN link (a lot nicer than Broadcasting House), Got a
book
launch and looking for a nice venue for a 7pm soiree?
We have had a few bookings already and we are really booking out the
room
using two conditions:
1. The event/meeting must have a clear connection between science and
the
media
2. That people must book the space in advance. (020 7670 2980)
And yes - It is FREE. The room holds about 40 people and we just
really
want it to be a buzzing space for media relations/ media/ science
events.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Becky Morelle
