Louise,
Re your message about black scientists - If my memory serves me correctly, I think there was at least 1 black scientist among the distinguished black residents of the Borough of Camden (both living
and dead) featured in Camden's recent poster about black history in the borough, which you could see in July/August at the 'bus stop by Sainsbury's at the foot of the Euston Tower, among other places. Unfortunately, I can't remember who all these people were, so you would need to check this with the Camden Co. Info. Office or the Camden Library down the road.
Also, coming even nearer home (in a manner of speaking) - Have you ever come across the super-bright geneticist and talented arts/science crossover practitioner Dr. Karen Akinsonya, formerly of the Univ. of Southampton (where if my memory serves me well she was a WT grant-holder or Research Fellow for some time), now of the Scripps Institute, California?
Hope this is of some interest-
Michael

Subject: Black scientists as role models
In an interview in Sunday's Observer with Ms Dynamite, the young black urban musician who recently won the Mercury music prize, she makes an interesting point about looking for black scientists as role models for kids. In response to a question about her black heroes she says:
"I would have to choose someone who was important as a scientist. I think that's very important. You don't get to see a lot of black scientists, especially in this day and age. I wasn't told of any when I was at school. And I think lots of black kids would want to be scientists, but they never get examples of someone who has done it before". [Her other choices are Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks].
A thoughtful response, but it's a shame that there's no-one with a high enough profile that she can name.
