Can I just say - THANKS - to everyone for their flurry of ideas. I've now
got a whole host of ideas to follow up and no doubt I'll be contacting many
of you off list (to the point where you wish you never got involved!).
The thesis that I'm writing forms part the Birkbeck Science Communication
course - which is absolutely excellent. Birkbeck have been kind enough to
indulge my whim to research this strange combination.
My background is that I worked in a lab for 10 years, did stand up comedy
for 5, then started doing science writing and science communication - when
it struck me that I ought to be combining science with comedy.
This has been interesting as producers from the very different worlds of
science and light entertainment don't quite 'get it' - leaving me with two
possibilities. That what I have written is hopelessly 'not funny', or that
people are quite set in their ways as to what comedy can be about, and what
constitutes a science show.
So, what I want to do is track down other people who have tried to do
similar things - find out if they worked / how they were received / were
they educational / was it a 'painless' way to get people into science / does
this fall within the confines of the 'science in society' mantra etc etc.
So - THANKS - and I'll let you all know how it goes.
In the meantime, one last one to add to the list - The Comedy Research
Project is a scientific duo trying to test the hypothesis that science can
be funny. They recently performed to tumultuous applause at the Cheltenham
Science Festival and are doing local pubs / weddings / barmitzvahs etc at a
venue near you......... well, if you can't fit in a little shamless self
publicity, what's the world coming too.
All the best
Helen
