I havent been keeping a close eye on this thread so I may
repeat what others have said. And I regret that the Paz
book hasnt been published in the UK. I think I wrote to
Michael Schmidt a couple of years ago asking about it
and he then planned to publish it.
But I am dubious about this theory that romantic love came
from the Arabs, probably thru Sicily, and Dante etc got hold
of it introducing it into Europe. Had they forgotten SAppho
and Catullus? And human nature itself. I dont think that
theory holds up as presented. But reformulated as inspiring
love poetry in Europe from Arab models with the Classical
inheritance lost it might hold up.
Was that what Paz was talking about? I regret I no longer have
Amazon to get hold of the book for me. And Richard Dillon's
account of Mrs Paz would seem to put him in a different league
from the rest of us. And as to Paz's poetry I am not convinced
when putting him beside someone like Darwush.
