hi liz,
more than
- slow burners that have suddenly come into their own at a particular
moment? -
i would say of myself that i am a constant burner of baudelaire, rimbaud,
shakespeare (he surprizes me every time), montale (great italian poet),
schiller, steiner, borges, ruffilli, george wallace my friend, mary de
rachewiltz whom i deeply respect, pound, cummings, the same virginia who
writes a poetical prose, ...
every single poet i have here at home of any period or style, they all
surprize me, always, amazing but that is how it goes,
as stunned i am in front of great painters, and how do i welcome a good
movie, i am the enjoyer of art and i enjoy it immensely
take care you all, poets and artists of the time

> that's intereresting - I have had a lot of pleasure out of Heaney as
well.... and I have enjoyed teaching him too, which I think is a good test.
I have found his recent stuff less interesting but then I would be happy
myself to have written as many strong memorable poems as he has!

> Shakespeare is just a constant for me too. I had a big Hamletfest a few
years back..... I'm not sure which one will catch me up next. I love the
treat of going to a good performance of Shakespeare, the pleasure of letting
the words roll through me. Like eating oysters I am always surprised that
it is legal to do it in public!

> Doug mentioned the Complete Works of Lorine
> Niedecker - I wonder if others on the list have cherished poets that they
have only come to really appreciate over a long period of time - slow
burners that have suddenly come into their own at a particular moment?
