Does anyone know off hand the amount their government spends on support for
the arts?
I seem to recall that in 2002 The Arts Counsil of Great Britain was asking
for an extra £25 million in addition to the nearly £50 million they had at
their disposal. How about 2002? Is Lottery money in support of the arts
independent of the AC or part of it? Do city counsils also support the arts
independently of the AC?
In the USA I know The National Endowment for the Arts is a big institution,
but how big? What sort of money do they hand out? I suppose individual
States and Cities also support the arts in their areas. Is there a great
difference between them in this respect.
How about Ireland?
Australia?
I merely ask because there is a persistent myth that keeps popping up in
discussions here that the English speaking countries rely on 'the market' to
'support' the arts, whereas north European countries, especially the
Scandinavian ones, are whimps who use 'taxpayers money' to support the arts.
I know this is too silly to bother responding, but when prominent,
respectable people start bandying such arguments they need to be squirched,
or whatever.
