Socialism is one of those things that like comprehensive education can only
exist if nothing else does: creating a system built on equality is not
enough, you have to cordon off or eradicate everything *outside* the system,
otherwise people desert or renege in search of competitive advantage. Which
is perfidious of them, but for as long as there's a rationale for it
somebody somewhere will try it. You can't ultimately have a truly
comprehensive education system unless you coerce everybody into
comprehensive schools, whether they like it or not, including the school
phobics and the teenage arsonists, because if you let anybody at all opt
out, even the homeschoolers, they'll find ways to make it competitively
advantageous for them to do so and you will have inequality again (imagine
the middle classes coaching their kids in antisocial behavior in order to
get them excluded so they can stay at home with a well-paid governess...).
