In The Guardian for Saturday March 16, 2002:

... there was an article by the late Ian Hamilton about a book he'd been
commisioned to do -- an updating of Sam Johnson's _Lifes of the Poets_. The
piece was relatively interesting, or at least readable.
But what baffled me was that Michael Schmidt's _Lives of the Poets_ was
published in 1998. OK, from what Hamilton says, and Schmidt did, there's
not a complete overlap.
But nevertheless, struck me as odd that two such similar books should be /
have been on the stocks at the same time.
Anyone know anything about this?
