Too busy to do more than say in passing that, yes, the thing we forget is that
the Australian bush needs fires as that's the way it regenerates. If you live
amongst it, that's what you gotta expect. The news headlines are full of
descriptors like 'beast' (meaning the inexorably moving fire) - I'm a great fan
of the pathetic fallacy but sometimes it just a bit pathetic.

P.S. Two houses burned down in my suburb last night. So now the fires have
reached Marrickville - or so it would have seemed from the way the story was
grouped with the other fire stories, but, of course, it was an entirely
different matter. Probably the usual spot of Sydney arson (and that has nothing
to do with cigarette smoking).
