The feminist inspired critiques of medical practice, such as handing out
happy pills to depressed women, is one of the cornerstones in progressive
approaches to harm reduction and drug use and it does in fact include legally
prescribed drugs such as valium. This critique was also essential in the
community based responses to HIV/AIDS in Australia.
In Brisbane a few years ago a young inexperienced doctor decided after about
five minutes I was clinically depressed and packed me off to a psychiatrist
(very expensive he was too) who prescribed an MDMA based anti-depressant
which was so strong it was like taking half a tab of E each morning for
breakfast. It took only five days for my life to completely come apart on
this medication and I fled Queensland vowing never to return. It also
destroyed my memory, risking the research I was doing there. I still have
a good mind to sue for malpractice. After all, anyone with Ross River Fever
will have symptoms including fatigue, depression and anxiety attacks. They
are three of the most obvious symptoms of that particular virus.
best, Chris Jones.
