On further reflection, and thinking of the time-scale involved, it looks as
if it +may+ be an XP problem.
It might be a glitch that's suddenly appeared in Windows XP -- frankly,
given the way that Bill Gates uses his customers to beta-test every
"upgrade", I wouldn't switch to a new version of Windows till it had been in
place for at least a year.
I'm running Windows98 (which, OK, puts me about three upgrades behind) but
when 98 +first+ came out, lo these many years ago, it had an unnerving
ability to trash your system, and the only solution was a hard drive
reformat. 98 is stable now, sure, but I don't think I'd trust any later
version yet, even Windows Millenium.
