Tomlinson's American Scenes (1966) is still one of the best books of poetry
written in a consciously US idiom by a brit, a Tom Raworth ahead of his
time. In reading his Selected Poems, however, I was saddened to see how much
of a departure from his more crabbed meditations on paintings, etc., it
proved to be. But there are a couple of poems in American Scenes (Las
Trampas, USA and Idyll, to be exact) that are worth an entire career, if you
ask me.
