I am pleased to see that this issue of Jacket also contains my friend Nagy
Rashwan's interview (carried out in 1996) with Ian Hamilton Finlay. Nagy is
the cleverest person I know. Before I met him, that used to be me. I am very
grateful to Nagy for allowing me to experience my own finitude in this way.
Nagy's story is that he took Finlay two Dundee cakes as a votive offering,
and Finlay did not even offer him a cup of tea although Nagy had travelled a
great distance to meet him. But it is Nagy's story, and he tells it better.
