Paul,
I just did a quick calculation on my fees for orthoses.
Based on 40 minute assessment (Medical, Biomechanical, and gait) @ $50.00
(including casting if nec)
$425.00 Can for the orthoses - This includes a fifteen minute dispense
appointment and one follow up appointment - 15 minutes and then if required
adjustments, perhaps 20% of devices need some additional adjustments after
the first follow up.
After orthoses costs, clinical administration fees, miscellaneous
professional fees and TAX , I earn approximately $120.00 Canadian off a pair
of orthoses for some 70 mins work (minimum). (If I had hair I'd use the
stuff that says "'I'm worth it" on the bottle)!
I think if we look at professional consultancy fees and service fees
generally I do not feel this is abusive. Although I do personally assess,
cast, dispense and follow up my clients myself. All the professional time is
mine. I am aware that many of our colleagues use "assistants" for much of
the above. The use of assistants for assessment and casting is perhaps
another issue altogether!
Perhaps ;o)!
Graham
