In the United States, at the age of 18, students graduate from high school.
They then enroll in a four year undergraduate program to obtain either a BS
or BA degree. After receiving the BS or BA, they enroll in Medical School
or Podiatry School or Dental School or Chiropractic School. Many students
matriculating to Podiatry School may already have their MS degrees and a few
may have had PhD degrees already. Podiatry School is four years in order to
get a DPM degree. After graduating with the DPM degree you still can't
practice in many states. Here in California, you are required to have at
least one year of post-graduate residency training after receiving your DPM
degree in order to even practice podiatry, while many receive two years of
post-graduate training. There also a few three-year residency trained
podiatrists.
In other words, here in the US, in order to even practice podiatry, you will
need at least eight years of training after high school. Here in
California, the youngest podiatrists to enter practice are rarely younger
than 27 years old. Podiatric medical education here in the US is not an
undergraduate degree. It is considered a professional graduate degree. I
believe that this makes the podiatry educational process here in the US
unique in the world. However, I stand to be corrected.
What is the average age that podiatrists start practicing in Australia and
the UK, assuming they didn't take any time off after their "high-school"
education?
Sincerely,
Kevin
