Hi Arthur
This is what we tell our students re heel spur statistics:
12-22% of adult population have heel spurs
39-72% of patients with heel pain have a spur on x-ray (Shama & Kamansky,
1983; Winson, 1996)
So there is an association between heel spurs and inferior calcaneal pain.
Whether it is cause or affect is open to debate but it seems reasonable
that as in the case of clacific tendonopathy the bodys' attempt to heal
itself results in the laying down of new bone.
Personally I think it very unlikely that the spur itself causes pain,
unless it has fractured, and I would never treat an asymptomatic heel for
potential development of inferior calcaneal pain irrespective of the
presence or absence of a spur.
regards
Ben
