Dear Colleagues,
I would be very grateful if you could bring to the attention of potential
candidates the opportunity below. Many thanks,

RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN MANAGEMENT
SCIENCE/OPERATIONAL RESEARCH
Following the appointment of Professor Kevin Glazebrook to
the Chair of Management Science at Edinburgh University, a
three-year research studentship is available to support study for
the degree of PhD under his supervision. Professor
Glazebrook’s research interests range widely across operational
research, applied probability and statistics. More particularly,
his work has included contributions to resource allocation in
uncertain environments, queuing control, sequential statistics
and Bayes decision theory, the latter including applications to
research planning, reliability, screening methods and optimal
search. Areas of current interest include
* decision-theoretic approaches to credit scoring;
* multi-location inventory problems;
* the optimal control of multi-class queuing systems;
* Bayesian approaches to the design of testing regimes for
complex systems subject to failure;
but supervision can be offered in other areas of mutual interest.
The studentship will provide for payment of maintenance at the
level of £8000 pa and of fees at the Home/EU rate. It may be
possible for doctoral students to supplement their income
through teaching support activities. Candidates should have a
good honours degree (at least upper second), or equivalent.
Applications from candidates with degrees in the mathematical
sciences (broadly defined) and other disciplines with a strong
quantitative component will be welcomed. Previous exposure
to probability and optimisation is not a pre-requisite, but a
preparedness to remedy any gaps in the candidate’s knowledge
base is.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Glazebrook
