Young OR Conference (YOR13) - Internet and E-commerce streams
1-3 April 2003, University of Bath, Bath (U.K.)
José Rodrigo Córdoba Pachón, University of Hull, Chair
YOR is a biennial conference intended for young academics and
practitioners with up to ten years' experience in OR. It gives younger
members of the profession an opportunity to present their work in a
non-threatening environment to an audience of their peers. There are
plenary talks by keynote speakers, interspersed with parallel streams
and a comprehensive and fun evening social programme
With the development of new information technologies, and their
increasing pervasiveness in society, it has become important to address
a variety of planning, design, implementation and maintenance issues.
We are in need of a better understanding of the impact that
technologies have in and beyond organisations. Also, new methodologies
and methods are needed to enable practitioners to manage perceived
complexity in the use of IS to gain competitive business advantage,
and/or provide access/services for the public in general.
In these streams we will approach the practice of information systems
and its problems through an OR perspective. This embraces a wide range
of methods, from 'hard' to 'soft' and 'critical'. There is scope to
appreciate the diversity of approaches and ideas that are used in both
developing and developed countries, in order to enrich the discussion.
We are interested in questions like:
*What approaches are we using to improve the practice of information
systems?
*How are OR methods currently used in this realm? How could they be
used?
*What are the main drivers for the use of OR approaches? Are they
technological, economic, social, cultural, ethical?
*How can we broaden the discussion of these aspects?
Contributions from the realms of theory and practice are welcome, as
well as approaches that look at the societal impacts of using
information systems (i.e. information systems for the community). Also,
we are interested in looking at the impact of new technologies
(e-commerce, internet, multimedia, mobile computing, expert systems and
others) on the practice of OR.
If you are interested in presenting in either the Internet or
E-Commerce streams, please e-mail me ([log in to unmask]) with
your name and an abstract of no more than 200 words related to your
research. You can also submit via online at
http://www.orsoc.org.uk/conf/yor13/book/submission.htm
For UK-based authors, financial support to attend the conference is
available from the OR Society through the Simpson Awards for young OR
people. These awards enable young OR people to attend the YOR 13
Conference, with all expenses paid. Closing date for applications is 31
October 2002. For further information please visit:
http://www.orsoc.org.uk/conf/yor13/simpson.htm
For further information please visit the main webpage of the conference
at:

All contributors should book for the conference by 31 January 2003,
thereby ensuring their talk will appear in the final programme.
Conference fees will be published with the Invitation Programme in the
January Newsletter (dispatched on 20 December). Registration fees in
2001 were £270 + VAT for members and £74 + VAT for ORS student members.
We hope there will be no more than an inflation increase.
