UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, INSTITUTE FOR TRANSPORT STUDIES (ITS)
Opportunities to join one of the UK™s top 5* rated university research
departments are available to well-qualified applicants interested in developing
their skills in a challenging application field. Two posts are available, one in the
field of transport network modelling/optimization and one in transport
economics. Each post is initially fixed for two years, but promising researchers
will be encouraged to develop their careers within ITS beyond this period.
RESEARCH OFFICER/RESEARCH FELLOW TRANSPORT NETWORK
MODELLING AND OPTIMIZATION
In this project, funded by the UK Engineering & Physical Sciences Research
Council, mathematical models and optimization algorithms will be developed
for the interaction between the travel decisions of road network users and the
control measures of transport planners, to devise transport measures that
maximise the ˜social good™. Broadly, this falls within the class of bi-level
optimization problems, of similar nature to Mathematical Programs with
Equilibrium Constraints. Knowledge of the transport area is not essential
provided applicants are keen to develop their mathematical skills in an applied
context. A first or higher degree with a strong mathematical element is essential.
Applicants with an operational research, statistics or mathematics background
would be particularly welcome. Good communication and report writing skills
are also desirable, as is an ability to work independently. Salary on the Research
1A scale (£17626-£26491) depending on qualifications and experience. Job Ref:
R74/133. (See below for application and further information contacts).
RESEARCH OFFICER/RESEARCH FELLOW TRANSPORT ECONOMICS
This post is required for a number of projects funded by the World Bank,
Department for Transport, European Union and the Strategic Rail Authority.
With a first degree in a quantitative discipline, preferably economics, you will
contribute to all aspects of research in the areas of transport appraisal economics
and modelling. Good communication and report writing skills are essential as is
an ability to communicate well with clients. Applicants with a background in
transport economics, or equivalent experience are desirable, but those with
excellent IT skills and keen to develop their analytical research skills, especially
in the statistical analysis of data, are encouraged to apply. An enthusiastic yet
flexible approach to research in this area is essential. Salary on the Research 1A
scale (£17626-£26491) or Research 1B (£17626-£19681) scale depending on
qualifications and experience. Job Ref: R74/134
