Joan
Our first aid team are only authorised to give asprin in case of suspected
MI, this has been agreed with our first aid training providers (WYMAS). They
do not give out any other medicines. Most of the ones you mention are OTC so
should be bought by the individuals themselves.
I have discussed with our company medical advisors and have reduced the
amount of creams and potions I use in the OH centre - not without some
disquiet from sections of the workforce but I try to stress my primary
function is health related to their work and working environment, not as a
substitute for their chemist or GP.
However if I can help someone who is having to wait to see their GP I am
happy to do so.

Joan
I would refer your people to the requirements of the First Aid at Work
Regulations, namely Regulation 2 (1) (a) & (b) 'definitions of first aid'
also Regulation 3 and the ACoP, which states what should be kept in first
aid boxes etc.
I would also point out that the company are responsible for their actions
and like you I would not authorise this type of 'treatment' unless I was
happy about their competence to do so and that they had received the
necessary training & supervision. (however in my personal opinion this type
of thing is totally unecessary!).
Hope this helps. Cynthia
