I am just not sure that we should be stunning employees. ;-)

(While I accept that WE are ALL personally stunning employees).

A very happy holidays to all.

Hi

My colleague sat opposite is an ex-Bernard Matthews workers and says that
all those hanging the live birds are particularly at risk from respiratory
sensitisation and were screened regularly for sensitisation. They are not
such a high risk once they are stunned.

I do remember that there was an Occ Health article jonks ago (about 1992-3
ish) that talked about animal handlers and platinum salts were the only
exposures for which atopics are not allowed to work with. This suggests that
the risk is extremely high.

Hunters suggests that the exposure to epilethial slough and bloom (fine
feather dust) does not have a high potency, whereas blood and other body
fluids do. So the fact that you are getting excreta flapped about is a
concern.

I think education, spirometry and history is really important. Have you
considered contacting the British THoracic Society or the NAtional Asthma
Campaign to see what they advise.

On an anecdotal point, the chap who built my conservatory is a pigeon
fancier, and he was telling me that when they have their annual pigeon
fanciers dinner (held at Blackpool !) some group has a facility for health
screening for Pigeon Fanciers Lung!

Can anyone help.
I am, doing some work in a chicken slaughter/ processing plant . Concerns
have
been raised re the exposure to dust /campylobacter/ other bacteria during
the
hanging of live birds on the conveyor. Camplylobacter is a contact risk but
the
birds do flap a bit sometimes and excreta and detritis may splash on to the
operastors. General dust ia also generated and airborne bacteria has also
been
detected. Question is what doe the results mean ? What standards doe we use
as
guidance ?
Any ideas ?
Cheers
