I have checked my sources and can find no reference to shrink wrap having
caused this type of dermatitis. I would suspect some other cause for the
dermatitis, if that is what it is.
Given the time scale (1 week from starting work) the problem is either
something fairly potent, if of workplace origin, or could be the result of
some non-occupational exposure.
Have you carried out a workplace visit to observe the work being done? If
not, then this is, in my view, essential as it may well show up some other
obvious reason for the problem.
Some of the questions I would ask are:
Are the two men known to one another? What were they doing before starting
work? Could this be some non-occupational activity/hobby that they share?
Is the blistering and peeling on the palms or backs of their hands? Is there
a
strong irritation/itching/burning sensation?
What was inside the wrapping? Is it possible that there could have been some
contamination, either of the wrapping or of the products inside the
wrapping?
Are other people involved in doing this job? How long have they been doing
it and have they ever experienced a similar problem?
You will find a Technical Bulletin on investigating a skin problem on our
