Dawn,
I am responsible for the provision of first aid in BP's London offices and
we have had AEDs for over 4 years now, stationed at the Security posts (as
our security team are the first responders to first aid call-outs).
Although we are based in the City of London, it can take a while for an
ambulance to arrive as the traffic is so busy (although this is better now
that the City of London Police arrive in advance on bikes). About 50 of our
first aiders and also members of our health team are trained as AED
operators. The initial training is one day followed by half a day every 6
months, and this is run by Barts City LifeSaver, a charity based at Barts
Hospital with the remit to train prople in the City of London in
resescitation techniques. The AEDs are easy to use and to maintain, and
give our first aiders a lot of confidence. The training is extremely
thorough with a test which must be passed. Barts also come in and stage an
emergency call-out which tests our systems and times the response between
the first telephone call for help and the first shock delivered. There is
always room for improvement!
St John Ambulance also offers AED training.
Do let me know if you need any further info.
Regards,
Bridget
