Dear List,
Teresa Gleadowe of the Curating Contemporary Art course at the Royal
College of Art has kindly sent her apologies that she is unable to join
the discussion this month, but has sent a message that she hopes will be
relevant to the debate:
---
"Perhaps the following statement will be of some assistance:
MA Curating Contemporary Art, Royal College of Art
The exhibitions organised by students on the two year MA Curating
Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art include New Media (and 'old
media') - in fact any media artists are currently using. The students would
see it as their responsibility to familiarise themselves with the demands
of any media used by the artists whose work they wish to show. The first
exhibition presented by students on the course in 1994 was exclusively of
video work - it was entitled 'Acting Out: The Body in Video Then and
Now' -
and in 1997 the students presented an exhibition entitled 'You Are Here:
resiting installations' which looked specifically at installation art. But
generally the exhibitions presented by students on the course are not media
specific and I am not convinced that there is a need for a postgraduate
course specifically devoted to 'curating new media'.
Of course there is certainly a need for training for curators working with
new media and I'm sure you are aware that FACT in Liverpool run excellent
training courses. They have recently published the MITES MANUAL which
provides a very good introduction to the subject.
