Dear All,
I'd be grateful if you could bring the following to the attention of any
suitable candidate.
Thanks,
Nik Kaltsoyannis

Postgraduate (PhD) Research in Atmospheric Chemistry
Applications are sought for a NERC funded PhD position (starting in
September 2002) to be held in the Department of Chemistry, University
College London.
The research will focus on the computational and experimental study of
important atmospheric gas phase chemical reactions. More specifically, the
goal is to fully characterise the product branching channels in reactions
which affect the budget of ozone and other key trace gases in the
atmosphere, i.e. to understand the partitioning of important trace species
between ozone-depleting and 'reservoir' forms, and to determine the
degradation pathways for pollutant gas oxidation.
The computational research will employ ab initio and density functional
quantum chemical methods to map out the potential surfaces of the reactions
(i.e. to calculate the structures, energetics, bonding and spectroscopic
properties of reactants, transition states, intermediates and products in
the various reaction channels). The experimental work will probe the same
reactions using discharge-flow with Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry
(CIMS) techniques.
The research is led by Dr Nik Kaltsoyannis and Dr David Rowley. Interested
candidates who hold, or expect to hold, an upper second or first class
honours degree in chemistry or physics should contact Nik Kaltsoyannis by
email in the first instance at [log in to unmask]
