POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN REACTION DYNAMICS
A postdoctoral position is immediately available in my research group
at the Max-Planck-Institut in Goettingen (Germany). The work of the
new postdoc will be concerned with the detailed description of
elementary reaction processes in small molecules, which are relevant
for the chemistry in the atmosphere (such as ozone, for
example). This includes processes like exchange reactions,
unimolecular dissociation, photodissociation, non-adiabatic
processes, spin-orbit transitions etc. 'Detailed description' comprises,
at least, three aspects: (i) the calculation of accurate potential energy
surfaces including non-adiabatic couplings; (ii) state-of-the-art
dynamics calculations using the input from the electronic structure
calculations; and (iii) comparison with detailed experimental
data. At the moment, I am very much interested in explaining 'unusual isoptope
distributions' (for example, for ozone) on the basis of exact
dynamics calculations. The computer facilities in Goettingen are
excellent with access to large clusters of workstations and several
parallel computers. Actually, parallelization of existing codes for
solving the Schroedinger equation for the motion of the heavy
particles will be an essential topic. The financial support is
provided by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft through the special research program
'Molecular mechanisms of unimolecular reactions'. Applicants should
have experience in either dynamics or electronic structure
calculations. In any case, they should be interested in theoretical
descriptions of molecular processes on a high level of
detail. Collaboration with outstanding scientists, experimentalists
as well as theorists, all around the world is an essential part of
the projects.
Goettingen is a small university town with a long history in the
center of Germany. It has a pleasant atmosphere with lots of
opportunities for cultural (theatre, cinemas, music etc.) and outdoor
(kiking, biking, etc.) activities.
