POSTDOCTORAL POSITION, UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, USA. A post-doctoral
position for up to three years is available starting immediately in the
experimental physical chemistry group of Nigel Adams. This research
involves studies of the gas phase process of dissociative electron-ion
recombination, an extremely important ionization loss process in many
plasma environments. In particular, the neutral products of the
reactions will be quantitively identified, a much-understudied area.
Both the fundamental mechanisms and applications to molecular synthesis
in interstellar molecular clouds, cometary chemistry, planetary
atmosphere chemistry and combustion will be investigated. The
recombinations of molecular ions varying in complexity from diatomics to
polyatomic hydrocarbon rings and chains will be studied. Special
attention will be directed to the recombination of H3O+, a critical ion
in many plasma applications, including those above. The studies use a
temperature variable flowing afterglow with electrostatic probes,
extensive mass spectrometric and spectroscopic facilities, and the
capability for sophisticated on-line data acquisition and analysis.
Those interested should contact Prof. Nigel G. Adams with a CV and the
names of three references. The contact information is Dept. of
Chemistry, Univ. of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602, USA, e-mail
[log in to unmask], phone (706)542-3722, Fax (706)542-9454. Applications
from those with experience with the techniques involved in these types
of study will be particularly welcome. The University of Georgia is an
equal opportunity employer.
