PhD and postdoc position in cluster and
nanoparticle spectroscopy at Freiburg University
A PhD position (3/4 BAT IIa) and a postdoc position (BAT IIa) are
immediately available in the group of Prof. Haberland/ v.Issendorff
at the physics department of the university of Freiburg
(payment for BAT IIa is 38-44 k€ per year pre-tax)
The research program will be focussed on the electronic structure of
free metal and semiconductor clusters and nanoparticles. Typical
subjects here are the strength of electron-electron and electron-lattice
interactions, the related relaxation time constants and their dependence
on particle size and temperature, and coherent and noncoherent effects
in the case of strong field excitation.
The successful candidates will be involved in the recently started
photoelectron spectroscopy study of a broad range of free size-selected
clusters (see e.g. Phys.Rev.A 65, 063201 (2002), Phys.Rev.B 66,
041404 R (2002) ), as well as in time-resolved measurements (fs
pump-probe photoelectron and photofragmentation spectroscopy) on
free clusters and nanoparticles.
PhD position: one task will be to set up an imaging electron
spectrometer for the determination of the angular distribution of
electrons emitted from highly excited clusters. Experience in fs-laser
spectroscopy and/or in vacuum technology (ion beam techniques or
electron spectroscopy) is of advantage, but not mandatory.
Postdoc position: due to the wealth of possible research directions
there will be plenty of room for his/her own initiatives, of course.
He/she is expected to have a solid background in one of the fields
given above.
Freiburg is renowned for being a most likeable city. Situated in the
south of Germany close to France and Switzerland, with the black
forest and the Alps nearby, it offers a rich choice of possibilities
for sport and cultural activities (and the best weather in Germany!).
