First Announcement

********************************

XIXth Conference on the
Dynamics of Molecular Collisions

********************************

July 13-18, 2003
Granlibakken Conference Center and Resort at Lake Tahoe
Tahoe City, California 96145 USA

Laurie J. Butler, DMC Chair
The University of Chicago
The James Franck Institute
5640 S. Ellis Avenue
Chicago, IL 60637 USA

Al Wagner, DMC Vice-Chair
Argonne National Laboratory

Description of the Conference

The Dynamics of Molecular Collisions Conference focuses on
all aspects of molecular collisions. Traditionally this
has included experimental and theoretical studies of elastic,
inelastic, and reactive encounters involving atoms, molecules,
ions, clusters, and surfaces--as well as half collisions--
photodissociation, photo-induced reaction, and photodesorption.
The scientific program for the meeting in 2003 includes the
most exciting advances in these core areas but also advances in
new multidisciplinary studies of molecular collision processes.
In 2003 we plan invited sessions in topics ranging from bimolecular
collision dynamics to interfacial dynamics in biological systems.

Researchers working inside and outside the traditional core topics
of the meeting are encouraged to contribute their work. We encourage
contributions of any work that seeks to understand how inter- and
intramolecular forces determine the dynamics of the phenomena under
study. In addition to the invited oral sessions and contributed
poster sessions, the scientific program will include a formal session
consisting of five contributed talks selected from the submitted
poster abstracts.

The Conference began as a Gordon Conference in 1965, and
though it now operates independently, retains the Gordon Conference
format and spirit.

The updated program for the meeting will appear on the conference Web site,
http://home.uchicago.edu/~ljb4/DMC2003.html. The Web site also has
photos of the Lake Tahoe area and accommodations described below.

Meeting Site

The meeting will be held at Granlibakken Conference Center and Resort
at Lake Tahoe, 50 miles southwest of the Reno/Tahoe International Airport
near Reno, Nevada. Nestled in a scenic, secluded valley in the High Sierra,
Granlibakken is sheltered by towering pines and red firs. Many miles of trails
connect the resort to interior forested areas with beautiful views. Lake
Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in the US, offers summer activities including
hiking, mountain biking, golfing, horseback riding, kayacking, water skiing,
windsurfing and rafting. There's also ice skating, fishing, bowling, bungee
jumping, rock climbing, aerial cable car rides, lake cruises, balloon rides,
and movie theaters.

Meeting Program

The XIXth Conference will have morning sessions on Monday
through Friday, and evening sessions Monday through
Thursday. In each session the first talk will be an overview
of the topic of that session. Afternoons are free for
discussions and recreation. Session topics and speakers will
be announced in the early fall of 2002 but will include all of the
core areas and include a special session on interfacial dynamics.

A poster session will follow the formal session on Monday
through Thursday evenings. Attendees are strongly encouraged
to present posters. "Camera ready" poster abstracts for
inclusion in the conference program book should be submitted
to the conference chair by May 15, 2003. These submissions
may be in either hard copy or electronic (PDF with embedded fonts
or Microsoft Word) form. Faxes or email (except "attachments") are
NOT acceptable.

Lodging and Meals

Reservations for accommodations must be made directly with the
Granlibakken Resort. (Registration for the DMC Conference
is a separate process [see below].) When making your
reservations with Granlibakken, you must identify
yourself as an attendee of the Dynamics of Molecular
Collisions Conference to obtain the discounted rate. The cost
of five nights of lodging (Sunday through Thursday) and five
days of meals (dinner Sunday through lunch Friday), based on
double occupancy is, $774. Single rooms, subject to availability,
may also be reserved at a discounted (but higher) rate. You can
reach Granlibakken at 1-800-543-3221 (from the US or Canada) or

Registration

Registration forms for the DMC Conference will be available
for downloading and/or printing from a PDF document on the
DMC Conference web page at

http://home.uchicago.edu/~ljb4/DMC2003.html

They will also be mailed upon request. Completed
registration forms should be sent to "DMC Conference, c/o
Laurie J. Butler, The James Franck Institute, The University
of Chicago, 5640 S. Ellis Ave, Chicago IL 60637 USA."
Be sure to enclose the appropriate payment. The fee for early
registration (received on or before April 15, 2003) is $100.
The registration fee after April 15 is $150.

Transportation

With advance reservations, Granlibakken offers a reasonably
priced shuttle from the Reno/Tahoe International airport to the
conference site. The one-way travel time is about an hour.
See the conference Web site for details.

Graduate Student Scholarships

Graduate student scholarship awards will be announced at the
Conference. The number and amount of these scholarships will
depend on available funds, but we plan to dedicate a large fraction
of the funds raised for the meeting to assist graduate students who
present a poster.

Please see the DMC web page for updated information.
