Hi Diljit,
In reply to your query, we have some data on our population mix from the
1991 census and from a local Health and lifestyle survey done last year,
unfortunately we do not have access to the 2001 census info.We have been
asked by the Scottish Executive to determine the demographic profile of the
district along ethnicity lines. We are considering several options here,
a) do we write out to all 500,000 clients on the CHI database held by Gps
asking for the info, This is similar to a project currently underway in
Liverpool being done by Ben Jones. It would probably prove to be too costly
for a population the size of ours, also it would take too long for our
current deadline.
or b) do we attempt to extract that information from the CHI using practice
based staff to identify individuals both by name and from local knowledge.
This is pretty hit and miss, but is quick ad cost effective.
or c) do we send a mail shoot to a randomly selected sample, and then
extrapolate from it. The problem here is that our local ethnic minority
population is too small (about 2-3 %) for us to get a representative sample
within a very small randomely selected sample.
Any thoughts on how we could do this?
Kind regards,
Henry
PS Thanks for all the useful comments and advice I have received thus far.

Hi Henry
Do you even know what mix your patient population is before you start to
try to meet their needs?
If not, how are you planning to do it??

Dear Colleagues,
I have been asked to provide a questionnaire for a staff consultation
exercise around
1) How well does the NHS meet the needs of the locally culturally diverse
population.
2) What is required to improve the current service.
3) The views of the ethnic minority NHS employees on the level of support
they currently receive and what could be done better.
Does anyone/organisation out there have a tried and tested instrument that
I could ammend. Even if it is untried, I would be interested in hearing
from you and sharing any outcomes from this work.
Kind regards
