I am writing to let you know that The Afiya Trust in partnership with
Cancer Equality, have just published a set of 6 audio cassettes for
carers of people with cancer form Asian and Chinese communities.
The tapes all have English on the B side and are in the following
languages.
Bengali (sylheti dialect), Cantonese, Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu.
Information includes:
* what cancer is
* the different options for treatment
surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy
* guidance through the system
* expected side effects of treatments
* advice on hospital discharge
* how to care for the patient at home
* support networks for carers
respite care, carers support groups
* benefits
* complementary therapies
In each language the tape follows the experiences of a person with
cancer and their carer. Alongside this an oncologist and lead cancer
nurse explain the different treatment choices for someone with cancer
and give practical advice on the best way to care for someone with
cancer. A carers' support worker and a complementary therapist also give
advice on the tapes.
The materials were developed in consultation with an advisory group
comprising a fluent speaker of each language. It consisted of cancer
experts, community workers and carers' support workers.
The tapes are free to patients and carers and voluntary and statutory
organisations can a set of six for £15.00 (This includes post and
package).
We are keen to get them out to carers and patients so please contact me
