Subject: [gloshistory] Pithead baths at Princess Royal Colliery Forest of
Dean

Hello everyone,

We need your help !!

For some months now The Forest of Dean Local History Society has been
campaigning to try and save the Pithead Baths at Princess Royal Colliery in
the Forest of Dean which could be demolished early next year to make way for
a small industrial site.
We are now asking for your help to make the South West Regional Development
Agency aware of the feeling of Foresters about this intrinsic part of Forest
of Dean mining history. Also fighting the battle is Jason griffiths of
Forest of Dean Community Radio and the following is an email received
recently from him.

Averil Kear Chairman FODLHS

Dear All
One of the biggest barriers to letter writing campaigns is the letter
writing. We're all really busy with work and various other campaigns. Who
has
the time to sit and write another letter with little hope of it having any
effect? So find below a draft letter to SWRDA re: The Pithead Baths at
Princess Royal. If you
agree that the building should be saved simply copy this letter into an
e-mail, or print and post to address below, or use it as a start point for a
letter of your own, or, of course, write a new letter of your own. If this
building is eventually lost, I at least want to be able to tell people in
the future that I tried my damndest to save it. 'It aint over til its over',
'Better to have fought and lost than to not have fought at all', etc etc
Regards,
Jason Griffiths Forest of Dean Community Radio

Dear Dawn
Please reconsider your decision to demolish the former pit head baths
building at the Princess Royal site in the Royal Forest of Dean. Although
attempts to get the building listed by English Heritage have failed, the
building is listed in the latest edition of Pevsner - the 'bible' of
important British buildings. It is said that there are similar bathhouses
elsewhere in the UK, but this building is of considerable local importance:
it represents part of the mining past of the Forest of Dean, part of its
cultural heritage. It is also one of the few local representations of this
early twentieth century building style.
The building could be refurbished and reused, forming a fitting and dramatic
centrepiece to the new business park. Higher value light and high tech
industries or offices would surely be attracted by such a site. It could
also
serve as a symbol of the South West Regional Development Agency's
sympathetic
and forward-looking approach to development; true regeneration in action.
Please save this building and by so doing win the appreciation and respect
of
the people of the Forest of Dean.
