Some very fine areas which have always been called Bell pits occur on
Shropshire.
On both of the Clee hills on the outcrop of the coal measures there are many
pits within yards of each other.
The area on Titterstone Clee is widely shown in mining publications and
contains hundreds of pits.
The outcrop or shallow areas near the Severn Gorge at Lightmoor still shows
lines of very shallow pits.
I do not know whether any of these areas have been examined during recent
open cast working.
