Having worked at Almaden Mine in the late 1980's I can testify to the
historic importance of the site, having been almost continuously worked for
mercury since the Roman times. There are several important features of
conservation value at the mine and surrounding area. These include the
intact remains of the distilling plant built in 1646 and is now in the
middle of the modern treatment works.
