Thanks for the responses but I have probably answered my own question. The
pigment produced from barium chemicals is chrome yellow aka barium chromate,
but it is usually, though not necessarily made from barite rather than
witherite.
The responses I received prompt me to comment.
Good white barite finely ground is used as a pigment or a filler in white
paint, blanc fixe, which is precipitated barium sulphate is much finer and
is used in better quality paint, lithopone which is a mixture principally of
barium sulphate and zinc sulphide is a non poisonous substitute for white
lead in paint.
Blanc fixe is also used as a base for coal tar dyestuffs.
