Ten years ago I visited a chalk mine at Emmer Green at Caversham near
Reading. We descended a 70 feet shaft into large caverns. The chalk was
used for putting on the fields by farmers, for lime burning and the flints
for building. There is an article by H.H. Carter in The Reading Naturalist
No 31 1979 pages 16-17. The mine was used during the last war for document
storage. Dates on the walls go back to 1776. Mike Breakspear
