I cannot answer that, but the mineral was described by Dr William Withering
(1741-1799), who called it "Terra Ponderosa". An early spot where witherite
was mined was an inconsequential lead mine at Anglezarke, in Lancashire,
between 1781 and 1790, long before any of the Northern Pennine locations
already quoted.
