FORK - 'IN-FORK' - 'FORKED'. Originally fork was the mane given to the sump of the shaft where water accumulated and from where it was pumped to surface. An engine was said to be 'in fork' when the water was being raised through all the lifts and was reaching surface. The sump was said to be 'forked' when all the water was drained out of it.
