One reference to check is the Mines of Mendip by J W Gough which refers (pp12
- 17) to the damage to cattle on and below the hills. The references in the
book go back to the 16th century. Even Agricola was quoting that "lead is
pestilential" (p11 of the Dover edition) and also discusses poisonous fumes
(p215) and other afflictions such as demons and ants. I had a quick look in
Agricola regarding pollution from ore washing but could not spot any
