Does anyone have any idea what the working life of a Newcomen engine might
be? An article by Bryan Donkin in an 1895 edition of "Engineering" (Vol LX,
p 505) describes, with photographs, a Newcomen engine which was at work at
South Liberty colliery, Bristol and which was thought to be one of the
oldest then working, having been built around 1750. I think that the engine
was still working when the pit was closed in the 1920s. Was this anything
out of the ordinary?
