Moors Crags and Caves of the High Peak and Neighbourhood, Ernest A Baker, HB
217pp, includes B& W photos plus plans and sketches. First published in
1903, this is a classic study of the earliest years of walking, rock
climbing and caving in the Peak District. It recounts the exploits of the
Kyndwr Club, a group of Sheffield and Derby Walkers which was founded in
1900. Baker was the leader of the group and this is his first hand account.
Included are his descriptions of the Blue John and Speedwell Mines, plus
Eldon Hole, Bagshaw Cavern and Peak Cavern. This book is a real treat for
outdoor enthusiasts and historians; first editions exchange hands for in
excess of £65.00 so at £14.95 it is real value for money.
Alpine Caving Techniques, Georges Marbach and Bernard Tourte, HB 232pp 46
B&W photos, numerous drawings and sketches. First published in 1973 in
French, this third updated edition has been translated into English and
includes new techniques and modern equipment. The book had gathered renown
as being a manual with biblical status- full of wisdom and common-sense.
Drawings are exceptionally clear and some will be recognised as those used
by Petzl. The manual is divided into 3 sections - Equipment, Physical and
mental aspects and Underground, each is then divided into sub-headings.
While it emphasises vertical caving and riging practices, the bok also
presents new and thorough discussions of many other aspects of caving
exploration. This is an excellent publication and should be of interest to
both new and experienced cave / mine explorers. £22.00

Wheal Kitty to name but a few. £10.99
The Miners Strike Day by Day Arthur Wakefield, edited by Brian Elliot, PB
176pp
The illustrated diary of a Yorkshire Miner. Veteran miner Arthur Wakefield
and many of his friends from South Elmsall and Frickley collieries never
missed a day's picket duty during the twelve months miners' strike of
1984-85, but what made Arthur's contribution so special was his
determination to record the day-to-day experiences of the strike in a diary.
Armed with nothing more than a camera, he travelled to pits, ports and works
in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and the Midlands. This book
brings together his material and it is a unique personal and social account
of this important industrial dispute. He attended several rallies and
marches and was a key witness at "The Battle of Orgreave" which he describes
as "Monday Bloody Monday" the 100th day of the strike. His descriptions
helped Channel 4 produce a live re- enactment of the events. £9.99
