I have looked through the records that I have and from which I compiled AS
Tribute to the Rhondda and the only thing that I can find that might have
had some similarity was the Wattstown Colliery Disaster of 1905 when it was
reported that the head of the funeral was reaching the cemetery at Trealaw
as the tail of it was leaving Wattstown.
However, whilst the 'disaster' might not have been recorded in the majority
of the books, it must be appreciated that during this period a British miner
was getting killed, on average, every 6 hours, and of all the British
coalfields the South Wales coalfield was the most dangerous.
Hope this is some help
Gareth

grandmothers history. She refers to a time in Maerdy early 1920's when she
remembers a terrible mining accident occured and all the people lined the
streets when the coffins went past. Do you have any idea what this incident
was exactly? I would be very grateful for any information you could give me.
Many thanks Kate Fox

Maerdy is in the Upper Rhondda Fach valley. Looking at my lists of
disasters, there were no major disasters in Glamorganshire between the
Darran Colliery Explosion on October 29, 1909 and the Killan Colliery
inundation of November 27, 1924, and then Wernbwll Colliery explosion on
November 28, 1929. The Darran explosion killed 29, the Killan inundation
killed 5, whilst the Wernbwll explosion killed 7. I don't know where any
of these collieries were but I don't think any of them were major
collieries.
Looking at the Rhondda Collieries book from Tempus, it gives a list of
disasters in the Rhondda on page 35. There is nothing listed between
1906 and 1932. The only explosion which killed over 100 in the 20th
century was the National No. 2 Colliery explosion of 1905, and National
Colliery was further down the Rhondda Fach.
Not a lot of help, I'm afraid
Cheers, Dave.
(To Mike: Remembering your last advert - can I have a copy of the new S.
Wales book by John Cornwall)
