Having taken advantage of Ian Winstanley's transcripts of the Children's
Employment Commission 1842, I find a reference where the term basket
actually described a wrought iron container. Viz.,
In Shropshire evidence "Of The Iron-Mines" para 3:-
There is a description of women and girls separating the pennystone "...and
putting it on baskets as they are called but which are small vessels made
of iron..."
Does anyone know whether this special use of the term basket was more
widespread in mining? For instance instead of kibble or bucket? And can
they point me to any further evidence or hints of such a terminology?
Many thanks & regards,
Andy Cuckson
