I think most unlikely that it's montanite! There are certainly some strange
minerals in the skarns around Dartmoor, but this one is a bit too strange
even for there. I suspect it's probably either a local name for a variety
of lignite, or one of the many types of clay that have been produced in the
Bovey Tracey area.
