Bob,
Mid Devon, around Winkleigh, is probably the least mineralised area of the
South-West of England. The north-south crosscourses in the area which are a
vehicle for mineralisation, or are mineralised fissures in themselves, to
the the north and south are barren. You mention the mine at Brushford, no
evidence of production there; Petrus filius does refer to an undefined mine
at Shebbear in 1524 (PRO SP1/236) but otherwise there is nothing. Clay
deposits were worked a little to the west of Winkleigh but these were in a
discrete detached area of the Bovey beds.
I suppose the obvious question is, was there any sign of veiniform
mineralisation or stratified minerals in the levels / tunnels?
Peter
