Weren't they crinoid stem segments (fossils) which are common in certain
horizons? These are generally around 1 cm across with a hole in the centre.

Subject: Luck Stones
Hi List,
Does anyone have any information on Luckstones? These were circular pieces
of limestone with a hole in the centre and were hung from the keystone of a
level. The miners (groovers) considered them good fortune. Miniature
specimens are extremely rare and were highly prized in there day for wear as
a ornament i.e. from watch chains.
